Wise men say that we create our own life. Many of us have heard about it and we all know the proverb “Every man is the architect of his own fortune.” But, for some reason, we recall this wisdom only when other people are having problems, or when we want to seem very smart and tell others how to live. And when it comes to ourselves, we don’t even realize that we build every day we live and its every moment with our own thoughts and actions. We tend to think that everything just happens, and we can’t do anything about it.
Unconscious life – everything just happens
Let’s take an example of an average man who has a usual lifestyle. This man wakes up early in the morning and remembers that last night he planned to do some physical exercises in the morning. But he wants to stay in bed for a little longer so much… “Okay,” this man thinks. “I’ll do it tomorrow, and now I’m going to have some more sleep.” Soon our hero manages to get up, because he has to go to work. Putting on his clothes, he’s thinking about how much he hates his job. When he was younger, he dreamt of doing something worthy and helping others. But now he has to put food on his table and pay his bills, so there’s nothing he can do… Still being in his negative thoughts about his failed dreams, he shouts at his son, who dawdles while getting ready to go to school. When the man comes to work, he doesn’t see a silver lining in anything at all. During the first part of the day, he stays in an utterly displeased state of mind, and after lunch he feels like he wants to go home and fall asleep. Thus, he doesn’t accomplish even a half of his tasks during his work day, and in the end of it he’s annoyed by his boss who points to this fact. While going home, the man thinks that it’d be good to have dinner and then help his son with his homework, because he feels guilty about offending him in the morning. Or he could have a romantic dinner with his wife and try to rekindle their relationship. But after eating he just lies on a sofa in front of a TV, and wants to do neither of these things. He tells to himself that tomorrow is going to be different, that he will get up earlier, do sports, think about getting a new job, and spend time with his family. And it all repeats all over again.
Each action of this person was made unconsciously:
- His desire to sleep in distracted him from doing sports
- His dissatisfaction with his own career led to an argument with his son and poor performance at work
- His tiredness of his own negativity didn’t let him spend quality time with his family
Do you recognize yourself in this scenario? Have you ever experienced anything like that in your own life? Have you ever thought that all these actions are nothing but the result of your own unconscious thoughts?
It regularly happens to most of us – we create our reality unconsciously. Moreover, we don’t even take the responsibility for what’s happening. Never managed to build a good career and start getting good income? It’s all because of the former business partner who couldn’t do business effectively. Never established a good relationship? It happened because all people of the opposite gender are dishonest, to put it mildly. Always suffered from bad health? It’s the fault of the doctors who can’t work professionally. But is it true that all these things are the circumstances we can’t change? If you got involved with an unskilled business partner, why would you even start a business with them? Wouldn’t it be better to find someone who knows what they’re doing? Isn’t it our own fault that we choose wrong people to build a relationship with? And speaking about our health, we can surely tell that before even getting to doctors, we’ve been having unhealthy lifestyle for years.
Conscious life – everything goes as planned
There are people who know that they create their own lives and they understand the mechanics of it. The day from the life of this person looks completely differently. He gets up with a conscious desire to do sports, because he understands that he can’t postpone it. He has to do regular physical activities for his body’s health. Getting ready for work, he’s prepared to start a new day and show brilliant performance. Even if he does something that he doesn’t consider his calling, he understands that he’s doing it to save up for opening his own business. He knows that it’s just a temporary decision that makes him closer to the realization of his dream. Inspired by his thoughts, he cheers up his son, who’s getting late to school. Then he kisses his wife, pets his cat, and leaves for work. During his work day, he stays in a good mood, remembering about his intention to develop necessary skills and save up the money he needs. He accomplishes all the tasks from his to-do list. His boss says that he did a great job and promises to think about a raise. Coming home, our hero eats dinner and, as he intended, helps his son with his homework. After putting the boy to bed, he drinks tea with his wife and discusses plans for the future. The spouses are sure that they will certainly accomplish their plans, because both of them are consciously working on their realization.
The difference is striking!
Let’s assume that these two men work in the same office and see each other every day. Probably, the first one often thinks about how this lucky guy manages to remain in a good mood every single day, while he experiences so many troubles. The answer is simple:
- Those who live unconsciously constantly react to the outside events and don’t have any idea of how to get out of an unpleasant situation
- Those who live consciously understand why they make particular actions, plan their future, set goals, and act to realize them. These people never get off the track, constantly proving the stability of their decisions to themselves and to others
In order for the first man to learn to live consciously, he needs to take responsibility for the way he lives. He also has to create a plan to realize his goals and start acting in accordance with this plan. The desire to sleep in, complain for a bitter lot, or lie down in front of a TV in the evening shouldn’t distract him from these goals. If he understands that he creates his life by himself, learns to do it consciously, and take responsibility for it, his life will change completely.
Let me guess what you’re thinking now. “I’ve heard about it all multiple times! It’s impossible. Just some gibber-gabber!” Believe me, I understand your feelings. If one just says something like “You create your own life, so be conscious about it,” it doesn’t solve any problems. It’s like someone tells you to nail a wall, but doesn’t give you a hammer. To accomplish any kind of actions, we need to have appropriate tools, as well as the understanding of how to accomplish this action.
